I find it hard to come up with a definitive reason, but the idea “I've gotten so much out of it, I can't quit now” is pretty strong. I still occasionally find people talking about stuff I haven't seen, and which turns out to be good, or interesting discussion in general. It's not rare enough for me to quit yet.

Another human being! But you're right. There is a habitual aspect to it, but on the other hand, sometimes I think wonder if the habit would have been formed if there isn't something intrinsic to mecha that resonate with someone who has stuck with it for decades. It's not like we haven't watched all the other kids fare as well growing up, but there's something about mecha that still ignites a certain passion, especially when like you said a really decent show come along. Or if the show itself isn't that good on the whole, a scene or two that captures what I really like about the genre.

before as well, and my next thought was “Do I really have such low standards that one scene will redeem a show for me?”. I'm not sure about that, but there's got to be something about mecha itself that makes me willing to keep watching all this stuff.

I can't quite explain it, but mecha just resonates with me on a deep level. I genuinely cannot understand any reasoning people might have for not liking giant robots. If the USA went to war with North Korea, and it was announced that there would be an experimental mecha division, I would work my ass off to join it. Even if they where shitty mass-produced Mega-bots I would stay up all night studying how they work.Even if my entire battalion where man-child otakus like us, I'd fight proudly along side them. Even if the whole thing turned out to be a massive failure, I would proudly wear a Mecha division patch on my hat and our battalion's insignia painted on my robot arm. Even if was for a cause I didn't believe in that would make me a monster in the eyes of history I would gladly climb into that cockpit. Because after everything is said and done, if there's one thing in this world I believe in it's Giant Robots
